Mothers Are to Blame for the High Rate of Rape in Nigeria - Gloria Young

A Nollywood artiste, Mrs Gloria Young, on Monday blamed mothers for the incessant rape and sexual harassment of girls.

Young told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the mothers had not given the girl child the proper training to keep them far from sexual abuse.

`` Who is to blame? Our mothers; our mothers do not train our sons very well, our mothers do not train our daughters very well.

``Why would you continue to tell your daughters that their place is in the kitchen?

``Why would you continue to tell your son that his place is in the parlour and waiting for them (daughters) to bring his food? It is not done.

``If you continue to encourage your son to belittle his sister, he will continue to think his sister is just an object, while his sister has more brains than he. So it's our mothers that caused it.

``So what we should now start doing is correcting this notion; it is the society's fault. The society should stop seeing women as second class citizens.

``We need to prove ourselves as women; we need to get up and say ‘it is enough’, we say ‘no to rape; we say no ‘to sexual abuse’; we say ‘no to sexual assault’; we say ‘no to even domestic violence’.

``We need to give our children this confidence, some of us have it. Why don't we encourage our children to have it?”

She urged mothers to rise up and correct this societal notion before it caused moral decadence in the society.
