Michael Caine, the actor with the cockney accent to rule them all, is 81 today.
Born Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, Michael Caine’s started his acting career as an assistant stage manager for a production of “Wuthering Heights,” which required him to perform small roles onstage.
His first stage name was Michael Scott, but another stage actor was already performing under that name. When he was informed of this, Caine was speaking to his agent from a telephone booth in Leicester Square, and picked the name Michael Caine because “The Caine Mutiny” was being shown at a nearby movie theater.
Caine’s big break came when he was cast in the film “Zulu.” He would later star in films like “The Italian Job,” “Battle of Britain,” “A Bridge Too Far” and appeared in the recent “Batman” films as Alfred Pennyworth.
